Qualities of a Successful College Student Essay Example
Qualities of a Successful College Student Essay What qualities in a student cause him/her to be successful in college? ESSAY 3 It can be fun for a person that is starting college. Starting college can be fun because the person is in a new environment. The environment is different for one who is starting because the person has to take on a more mature responsibility than he or she would have had taken on while in high school. Although starting college is fun, there are 3 roles a student can take on in order to be successful while in college. After getting through the 2012 school year, I have come to the conclusion that in order for a student to be successful while in college, he or she has to do the following: take a College Career Success Skills class his or her freshman year, he or she has to feel the professor out, and the student has to also take down notes. Taking a College Career Success Skills course is the best class that a 1st time freshmen can take while in college. It is the best class because the student finishes the course, knowing that he or she is going to be successful while majoring in the career of his or her choice. The course allows the student to explore a major and write a paper about it. This is because many students enter college not knowing what he or she wants to major in. The student also learns if he or she is capable of being successful in the field through taking a personality test. This test determines if the studentââ¬â¢s personality match the field. For example: If bob was a 1st time freshman and he did not know what major he would be successful in studying, taken this course would have given him the answer because he would have had found the career that he knows he is good in. So, CCSS is the best course for a student who is trying to find a major to be a pro at while in college. When the student feels the professor out, this is another way of being successful while in college. This is because in order to past a course, the student has to think the way the professor would think. The student has to work a math problem out or write a sentence out the same way his or her professor would because that is what one who goes to school would called ââ¬Å"thinking like the professor. â⬠When a student receives a graded paper, the student is suppose too get up and ask him or her ââ¬Å"What did I do wrong? What did this comment mean? â⬠This way, the student has all the information he or she needs to pass the course. If the student was told to work on subject-verb agreement, this would be the main thing that the student would look out for while writing because this was his or her weakest point. This way, the student then thinks just like the professor by writing out sentences like him or her. Good note-taking skills are another great way to be successful while in college. It is another great way because every piece of note counts. Every piece of note counts because everything that was written down over the week will be on the test. A student that takes down notes all week will mostly likely say ââ¬Å"oh, I remember thisâ⬠, when it is time to test because basically it was the test the student was writing out the whole time. If a student has written down all of chapter 6, he or she is suppose too be familiar with the test after taken down notes all week. Therefore, writing notes is another quality of a student being successful while he or she is in college. What qualities in a student cause him or her to be successful while in college? Many colleges are wondering the qualities. It takes one from experience to answer such a question. After surviving the spring 2012 semester, my following qualities were: taking a CCSS course to figure out what would I be successful at studying in, feeling out the professors so we both can cooperate like teacher-student, and writing down everything the teacher wrote on the board. Those are the qualities I would recommend to any student that is asking ââ¬Å"what qualities in a student cause him or her to be successful in college? ââ¬

Rem Koolhaas and Jan Gehl Theories in City Planning
Rem Koolhaas and Jan Gehl Theories in City Planning People take different positions when debating on a subject and this is not any different in the architectural world. The two architects presented in this paper have taken very different positions concerning how cities should be designed as outlined below.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on Rem Koolhaas and Jan Gehl Theories in City Planning specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Rem Koolhaas, in his interview with Spiegel Online titled An Obsessive Compulsion Towards the Spectacular, seems to be for the construction of large sophisticated buildings in the cities. For Rem, spectacular should be the main guiding concept when designing buildings in cities and not sustainability as being advocated for by environmentalists. He asserts that experience and intellectual force are there in the world, for example in Middle East and the West, which can be utilized to come up with spectacular buildings. However, he is also awa re of the challenge that exists in merging the experience from the West with intellectual from the Middle East (Koolhaas side 1). Rem seems not to like the idea of similarity in buildings designed by different architects, but also notes that it is sometimes inevitable. He notes that the large architectural buildings in most cities are almost the same design. He, however, blames this on time limitation for research when designing buildings, which often force architects to borrow from existing buildings rather than coming up with new designs. He does not like this similarity, but also acknowledges that sometimes architects are forced by the customers to domesticate existing designs especially in air conditioned buildings. This is because the owners of the buildings have pinned down the architects to what they want and not what the architects want to design (Koolhaas side 1). The constructions nowadays are meant to create ambiguity and complexity in order to escape the challenges that come with being explicit (Koolhaas side 3). Jan Gehl, on the other hand, is also for large buildings in the city, but he insists that there has to be space put aside for people. In his interview with ASLA-The Dirt, Jan insists cities have to be planned for the people and that buildings have to be designed for the people to be able to live healthy lives (ASLA-Dirt side 3). Jan insists on sustainability as the guiding concept when designing cities. He notes that buildings have filled the landscape. This has led to planning becoming a profession. Architects take care of the buildings and the planners do the planning. A buildingââ¬â¢s ground floor should be rich and the whole city will be rich. It should be designed to fit peopleââ¬â¢s interaction and communication (ASLA-Dirt side 2). He considers Pizza del campo in Sienna as a place where human care has been observed (ASLA-Dirt side 3). For Jan, similarity of buildings designed by different architects is not an issue so long as t he buildings are designed with sustainability in mind.Advertising Looking for critical writing on architecture? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The two architects, however, have some converging positions. They both agree on the fact that there is a need for a peopleââ¬â¢s space in the cities. Rem acknowledges trying to design Dubai as a true public place. He wants to create a city in Dubai that has space for people and not the place you find in every city like shopping malls, but also maintain an urban life for the people (Koolhaas side 1). He notes that urban centers are not lacking anything, but are confused in that they are too densely populated that in future the cities could be insecure to live in (Koolhaas side 2). This could make the European city a history since nobody will live there anymore. ââ¬Å"Biggest not tallestâ⬠is the common phrase that people use nowadays (Koolhaas side 2). The difference between a science centre and the development going on in Dubai is the political environment and the amount of freedom and latitude the architects are given (Koolhaas side 3). The two main typologies of buildings today are houses and towers unlike in the 20th century when there were many types (Koolhaas side 3). He thinks that competition between buildings to be the tallest is just a ridiculous idea. He notes that length is becoming less of a concern as architects focus on size so that the building can be multifunctional (Koolhaas side 3). T he factor of big multifunctional buildings makes people to always be in motion while the buildings are constantly being renovated (Koolhaas side 3). He notes that the larger the space, the better, but the buildings should have a place where people could meet to interact (Koolhaas side 4). Just like Rem, Jan too feels that the cities are too much filled with buildings instead of being planned for the people. Nobody takes care of the people living in the buildings (ASLA-Dirt side 2). He says that it would be better to take care of the people than to take care of the buildings. Cities should be designed in such a way that it facilitates a healthy life, for example, encouraging people to cycle to work not to just sit and move in motor vehicles (ASLA-Dirt side 3).Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on Rem Koolhaas and Jan Gehl Theories in City Planning specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More We should always build for human scale not for structure scale. It is, however, very difficult to build considering human scale while the buildings there at the moment are built to structure scale (ASLA-Dirt side 4). This challenge is worse in third world countries where cars and motor cycles increase by the day (ASLA-Dirt side 5). This makes it difficult for city planners as they are forced to constantly revise the plans. Critical Discussion Remââ¬â¢s point of view is good as it would lead to better developed cities with the best and most complex designs. This would also lead to better services and delivery of goods in an easy way as the infrastructure is well taken care of. However, the problem with Remââ¬â¢s position is that his position does not concentrate on the most important idea of taking care of people and making cities secure for the people in the future. Janââ¬â¢s point of view is that the cities should be planned for the people, but also notes that buildings are an important part of cities. The weakness of this way of thinking is that there will be less development in terms of infrastructure especially in third world countries where cities are growing in population day by day. Leaving spaces for people in the cities would compromise city development. The two positions can, however, be combined to make a wonderful idea. That is, combining spectacular with sustainability. Construction of complex buildings in cities can be encouraged s o long as the architects have people in mind. This way, there will be more economic developments in our cities as the people are comfortable and healthy (ASLA-Dirt side 3). ASLA-Dirt. Interview with Jan Gehl. 5 WARNING Signs You Have a Terrible Boss
5 WARNING Signs You Have a Terrible Boss So many people change jobs to get away from a manager they donââ¬â¢t get along with, or canââ¬â¢t stand. Bad bosses are the absolute worst. It makes enjoying your work exponentially harder, and can even give you so much stress you end up taking a good bit of that stress home. Before you decide whether you need to bail, it might be a good idea to get clear on what it is youââ¬â¢d be running from if you decided to leave your current job. That way youââ¬â¢ll have a better idea what to look for: a new job/career- or just a different boss. Here are 5 signs that it isnââ¬â¢t you or your current position; itââ¬â¢s your terrible boss:1. Youââ¬â¢re Always MicromanagedApart from being thoroughly annoying in almost all cases, micromanaging can also be sign of a bad boss. Despite their piety, their overzealous attention to your every move doesnââ¬â¢t increase your productivity- quite the contrary. If youââ¬â¢re left wishing your boss would just trust you to do the job she hired you for, and youââ¬â¢re near exasperationâ⬠¦ sounds like a bad boss factor.2. You Can Never Reach OutOr itââ¬â¢s the opposite: your boss is AWOL whenever you need him or her. When you have a question, a concern, an urgent to-do- the door is shut. Everyone is busy, and you want your manager to be a mover and a shaker in your field, but it is important to make face time with your employees. And at least to be available in a crisis.3. You Feel BulliedIf you feel personally victimized by your boss, thatââ¬â¢s a bad sign. If your boss belittles you, insults you, undermines you, calls you out publicly for things that arenââ¬â¢t your fault, or interferes with your workâ⬠¦ then they are in the wrong, and very unprofessional. Bad boss!4. Inconsistency is CommonThe mark of a good boss- even a tough one, is consistency. If your boss is Jekyll and Hyde-ing you left and right, is generally unreliable, and changes plans and strategies midstream, then thereââ¬â¢s n ot much youââ¬â¢ll be able to do to fix the situation.5. Thereââ¬â¢s a Two-Way Lack of TrustIf you donââ¬â¢t trust your boss, and you feel a palpable lack of trust coming from her to you? Thatââ¬â¢s a problem. If you donââ¬â¢t have each otherââ¬â¢s backs in the appropriate employer/employee way, thereââ¬â¢s not much hope.If one or two- or even all- of these things sum up your situation, there are some things you can try to do before jumping ship:Try to Fix the RelationshipPeople can, and do, change. If you donââ¬â¢t already think your boss is the devil incarnate, it might be worth a little interpersonal work to see if you canââ¬â¢t get off on a better foot together. It could fail, but youââ¬â¢d be no worse off. The best way to go about this is to first acknowledge your own failings and accept responsibility for the ways in which you are not contributing in the best way to the relationship. Itââ¬â¢s an exercise in maturity, and worth a try.Escape With out EscapingSometimes itââ¬â¢s possible to move within your company. Try getting switched onto another team, or to another department- even a different office. Youââ¬â¢ll have the added advantage of being able to network yourself closer to an open position before it hits the open internet. Start by making yourself available to help different coworkers on different teams; thatââ¬â¢s a great way to introduce yourself and your skill set.Start LookingSave yourself from quitterââ¬â¢s remorse and donââ¬â¢t just storm out one day never to return. Prepare for the inevitable, if it is indeed inevitable. Start looking for new jobs, preparing your resume, etc. You never know, your best opportunity could come out of this one bad situation. You just need to keep your head up and make the proper moves.

Contract Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Contract Law - Essay Example Since Standard Contracts display an inherent certainty, they leave no scope for ambiguity. The Supplier who has made the Standard Contract (Employers, Banks, Investors and other such people) can impose their own clauses. They impose their own clauses and are adamant about any proposed change by the client. What makes provisions in agreements ââ¬Å"standardâ⬠is the failure of the client to negotiate them and the willingness of those artists to accept such an off-putting reply that something is ââ¬Å"standard.â⬠( IVAN HOFFMAN, B.A., J.D.) There are of course many provisions that should be included in any thorough agreement even though many of those provisions and their internal components remain fully negotiable. But at the very least, money points, royalties, advances, reserves should be considered as fully fair game in all deals. Other agreed terms, whilst not mandatory, have been subject to agreement between the negotiating parties nationally and should not therefore n eed amending in any way at local level. There are only a small number of terms which will be particular to each practice and which will need to be tailored to reflect the agreement. In the present scenario there is precious little that the client can do. There are not too many legal instruments could be provided to the client against the supplier, who has prepared the Standard Contract. As a rule, the standard conditions are valid in most circumstances.

Micro credit Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Micro credit - Essay Example The success of Grameen Bank, which was started by Yunus Muhammad in Bangladesh has always been used as a demonstration of the creditworthiness of individuals that live in poverty and the possible positive socio-economic effect of microfinance. The Grameen Bank is popular for two practices of innovativeness; these are mainly serving female customers and giving loans to small groups or individuals that come together for common economical purposes, with shared liability that replaces monetary collateral. Being an approach that is market-based to fighting impoverishment, the focus of microfinance and microcredit is on the development of entrepreneurship and the expansion of self-employment (Abed, 2000). Presently, the institutions of microfinance serve about one hundred and fifteen million individuals. They have a close relationship with the customers, simplified processes and support extension to customers via group networks as well as some other resources, like a basic training on the repayment of loan. The industry has been highly diversified, reaching different sections of the society, though not usually reaching the poorest (Yunus and Weber, 2007). The providers also vary as they range from NGOs, cooperative unions, government and commercial banks, point-of-sale partners like post offices and shops, self-help groups and credit unions. Technology is increasingly assisting in the facilitation of access to the financial services and the reduction of costs of administration. The product portfolios are growing to encompass different kinds of insurance mechanisms and savings, remittance services and emergency loaning, demonstrating the rising recognition of the several financial empowermentââ¬â¢s dimensions. The battle against the availability of credit markets and hence against high rates of interests that the moneylenders demand is not new. They use the power of information concerning the potential borrowers and require different rates of interest

A Slaves Soul Runs Deep Essay -- essays papers
A Slaves Soul Runs Deep A Slaveââ¬â¢s Soul Runs Deep The poem ââ¬ËThe Negro Speaks of Riversââ¬â¢ by Langston Hughes is about a man with a vast knowledge and understanding of rivers. The first two sentences of the poem are similar, as in both Hughes states, ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ve known riversââ¬â¢. From this the reader gathers that this man has been around rivers and probably lived around rivers. He talks about different experiences he has had on four different rivers. For example he says, ââ¬ËI bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were youngââ¬â¢ and this gives the impression that he was around long ago when the river was just starting to form. Another quote, ââ¬ËI heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln went down to New Orleansââ¬â¢ shows a passage of time from the first quote as this historically places him in a much more modern time frame. On an unobjective level I think that this is a poem about different rivers that Hughes feels attached to for some unexplained reason. However, based on a close read ing I would argue through the explication approach that this poem can be seen in a different light. While some may argue otherwise, I believe that on an explicative level Hughes is creating a comparison between his soul and the rivers. In taking a closer look at many different aspects such as genre, my close reading interpretation, and outside research I have reached a conclusion. I have discovered that Hughes did a wonderful job of describing the slave experience as seen through his soul and the souls of all others who have experienced slavery. I believe that Hughesââ¬â¢ poem is oral. It seems to read as if he is passionately reciting to some fictional audience. It makes sense for his presentation to be oral as he is describing his history as well as the... ...eaks of Riversââ¬â¢. This clearly demonstrates how truly important the issue of slavery was to him and how his life had become symbolized by the poem. This poem at first seemed straightforward to me. As I read it more closely and thought about it more I began to put bits and pieces together. I think Hughes has done a wonderful job of describing the slave experience, from the beginning of his narrative to the end, which is when he starts to realize that a brighter future might exist. The way it was written made me really think about what it was Hughes was trying to say. This poem made me realize that a great many people suffered as slaves. These people lived their whole lives in this capacity, most without hope of any change of status. I felt like I was putting together a jigsaw puzzle and it was a good feeling when I finally saw what I believe Hughes wanted me to see.

Bhagat Singh, Indian Freedom Fighter Essay
Bhagat Singh, the epitome of heroism, was a revolutionist during the Colonial Period in India. Bhagat Singh was well known for his admiration of martyrdom. Bhagat Singh was one of the most well known Indian freedom fighters and Indian revolutionaries and who contributed significantly in the Indian Freedom Struggle against the British. Singh was born in a family that was actively involved in revolutionary activities against the British rule in the country. He is also addressed as Shaheed Bhagat Singh, meaning martyr. Singh was born in a Sikh family which was involved in revolutionary endeavors against the British. He was a prominent member of various revolutionary associations and was also one of the major leaders of the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA), which was later known as the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) in the year 1928. Early Life of Bhagat Singh Bhagat Singh was born on 28th September, 1907 to Sardar Kishan Singh Sandhu and Sardarni Vidyavati Kaur, in Khatkar Kalan village in Lyallpur district of Punjab. Arya Samaj had a strong on the life of Sardar Kishan Singh. His uncles as well as his father were all part of the Ghadar Party that was led by Kartar Singh Sarabha. The Jalianwalabagh Massacre, which took place in Punjab in 1919, had a deep impact on the mind of young Bhagat Singh. In the year 1920, Mahatma Gandhi started the Non Cooperation Movement. Bhagat Singh actively participated with a great hope that this movement would bring freedom to the country. Bhagat Singh challenged the British rule and followed the wishes of Mahatma Gandhi by burning his government-school books and imported clothes. During his early age, Bhagat Singh used to read a lot of literature and poetries especially written by Punjabi writers. Allama Iqbal from Sialkot, who was also a freedom fighter, was Bhagat Singh`s favourite poet. By winning an essay competition that was organised by Punjab Hindi Sahitya Sammelan in 1923, young Bhagat Singh attracted the attention of the Punjab Hindi Sahitya Sammelan. Initially, he studied at the National College in Lahore. But after some time, he ran away from his home in order to escapeà early marriage. Contributions of Bhagat Singh Bhagat Singh became an active member of Naujawan Bharat Sabha and also joined Hindustan Republican Association, which was headed by Ashfaqulla Khan and Ram Prasad Bismil. Later on, he became the leader of the association. On 30th of October, 1928, a protest was led by Lala Lajpat Rai against Simon Commission but that too in a non violent way. During this protest, the police resorted to Lathi charge and Lala Lajpat Rai was severely beaten. After this incident, Bhagat Singh with other revolutionaries, planed to kill the police chief. But because of a mistaken identity, J. P. Saunders, a Deputy Superintendent of Police was shot instead of Scott. Immediately after that, Bhagat Singh left Lahore and he also shaved his beard and cut his hair to avoid recognition. After this incident, the Defence of India Act was enacted by the British government in order to give more power to the police. On the other hand, in response to this act, Hindustan Socialist Republican Association planned to blast a bomb particularly in the assembly, where the act was supposed to be passed. According to their plan, it was decided that Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt would throw the bombs. On April 8, 1929, they threw the bombs; however it neither killed nor injured anyone. Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt surrendered themselves for arrest. They were sentenced to Transportation for Life for the incident. It was after their arrest that the British rulers came to know that Singh was involved in the murder case of J.P. Saunders. He admitted his crime and made statements in the court against the British as a tool to publicize their cause of freedom struggle. However, the court ordered the case to be carried out without members of the association who were present at the hearing. This order produced a chaos amongst the supporters of Bhagat Singh. Bhagat Singh along with other prisoners launched hunger strike in the jail. The main reason behind this was that the British thieves and murderers were given better treatment than the Indian prisoners. According to law the Indian political prisoners were supposed to be given better rights. He also demanded that the Indian political prisoners should not be forced to do any sort of undignified work. This hunger strike lasted for 63 days and ended with the submission of British power. With this, he gained tremendous popularity. Ideology of Bhagat Singh Bhagat Singh used to maintain diary while in jail. The diary was a precious one as he made numerous notes relating to the quotations and popular sayings of various people whose vies he supported, prominent were of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Political thought of Bhagat Singh`s evolved gradually from Gandhian nationalism to revolutionary Marxism. By the end of 1928, Singh and his comrades renamed their organisation the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. After going through the teachings of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and Vladimir Lenin, he came to believe that, India with such a large and diverse population could only survive properly under a socialist regime. Bhagat Singh became the first socialist leader of the country. Bhagat Singh was hanged on 23rd March, 1931 at 7:30 pm, in Lahore Jail, along with fellow revolutionaries Sukhdev and Jai Rajguru. After his execution, youths in the country rioted in protest. Thus the desire of Bhagat Singh to inspire thousands of youths to assist the Indian independence movement took a serious turn.
